Wood sleeper or recycled plastic sleeper?

Sleepers are pretty durable items, and used railway sleepers have long been used to provide casual seating, landscaping features and raised beds in gardens and allotments all over the world.

Why bother with a recycled plastic sleeper?

Well, they do look stylish, and more importantly, they last forever, or at least as long as me or you.

They never rot.

Traditional sleepers were preserved with creosote derived from coal. However, it tended to leach into the soil and was taken up in vegetables, or gave that strange unique smell in hot sun. Creosote has been found to be toxic and can cause skin rashes even in small amounts and much worse in larger doses or from extended exposure. Not the thing to have around young children.

Recycled plastic sleepers need no paint or toxic preservative, do not leach anything into the soil, have no splinters for little fingers, are pretty well immovable once in position, serve as useful seating around the garden, and we do call them decorative sleepers to highlight their landscaping potential when used around a planned garden.

You will never, ever need to replace them, and if you did want a change, they are fully recyclable.
